ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Floor & Decor rolled out the red flooring for its first New Mexico store.
The Georgia-based retailer focused on hard-surfaced flooring opened its doors Sept. 6 to its 74,000-square-foot building at 4936 Pan American, East Freeway NE.
The five-acre property was previously ABC Bonded Warehouse. Maestas Development Group is the developer behind the project. Albuquerque-based Wilger Enterprises was the general contractor on the project. The cost of the project was about $10 million, according to Maestas Development Group.
“We are delighted to help bring this national retailer to New Mexico. The economic impact of Floor and Decor will invigorate our construction and housing industries and has already created more than 50 new jobs,” Steve Maestas, CEO of Maestas Development Group, said in a statement.
Matt Averill, the store’s “chief executive merchant,” said he received about 175 applications for the 48 positions he’s filled and the five more he’s planning to hire for. Averill said he had to work “extremely hard” to get the word out about the job opportunities at Floor & Decor. He said part of the challenge of staffing was people taking a “leap of faith” leaving a job for a new employer. The work was worth it, he said.
“I feel like out of all of the stores I’ve worked at, this has been the best staff I’ve been able to work with,” he said. “I feel blessed.”
The store held an industry opening on Sept. 5 where about 500 people came out to tour the new store and win prizes like a truck.
Averill, who moved to Albuquerque from Tucson, Arizona, earlier this summer to open this store, said he knew there was opportunity for a store in New Mexico when he would see Albuquerque customers at Floor & Decor in Denver. This is the company’s 93rd location.
“We’re grateful to be in this community,” Averill said.
Floor & Decor posted $1.38 billion in revenue in 2017.
